The Origin

Built After Hours,

This engine belonged to Joe Koban — an engine builder at Steve Morris Engines. Joe brought it to the shop for after-hours work, and the team decided to turn the build into something bigger: a full video series documenting every step of the process.

The result was the "Above Average Joe Small Block" series — a behind-the-scenes look at building a performance small block from the ground up, inside the same shop where world-record engines are put together every day.

The Build

Mostly Stock 383.
Nearly 700 HP.

Starting from a mostly stock 383 Full Roller foundation, the engine was upgraded in stages throughout the giveaway period while viewers followed along. By the time a winner was drawn, it had been dyno'd and proven on the engine dyno.

After initial dyno testing, the engine sat idle for months. Joe had no vehicle lined up to drop it into — and a fully built, proven small block sitting on a shelf isn't doing anyone any good.
